One of the books element that can be compared to todays society is the telescreen. The telescreens in 1984 were everywhere and never turned off. It Picked up everything you did in your apartment.
In the beginning of the book Winston looks out his window and sees a poster that says, “Big Brother is watching you” (Pt. 1 Chp.1) and begins to act rebellious. Winston tries to escape the “Big Brother” in his mind, he begins writing in his diary about it. Winston Smith in the beginning of the story is against Big Brother.
Is Big Brother watching you? Who is to say for sure and to what extent; although in present day, the potential existence of Big Brother, as showed in George Orwell's 1984, brings across a truly unforgettable and thought provoking moral and mystery puzzle.
Throughout the novel 1984 the totalitarian government, called Big Brother, is constantly attacking the people psychologically. One of the first things that strikes protagonist Winston Smith is a poster in the street reading “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” (Orwell 5).
But according to John Kampfner, the author of the article “Big Brother is watching you more closely than ever: CCTV cameras, the spies of our midst”, which was published in 2012, this surveillance of the British population is a wrong way to fight crime.
